“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” (Gen. 1:27). God has given women alone the honor, joy, and responsibility of being a mother. Here are 20 Bible passages about the goodness of motherhood (all Scripture quotations from the English Standard Version):

God has designed creation so that only women are given the calling of bearing children.

1. The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. (Genesis 3:20)

2. Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. (Psalm 127:3)

3. For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. (Psalm 139:13)

4. Let your father and mother be glad; let her who bore you rejoice. (Proverbs 23:25)

5. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.” (Luke 1:30-31)

6. Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control. (1 Tim. 2:15)

Mothers have the joy and responsibility of loving and teaching their children.

7. Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching, for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck. (Proverbs 1:8-9)

8. My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not your mother's teaching. Bind them on your heart always; tie them around your neck. When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you. (Proverbs 6:20-22)

9. “Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.” (Isaiah 49:15)

10. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. (2 Tim. 1:5)

11. And so train the young women to love their husbands and children. (Titus 2:4)

Mothers are to be honored by their children.

12. “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” (Exodus 20:12)

13. A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish man despises his mother. (Proverbs 15:20)

14. If one curses his father or his mother, his lamp will be put out in utter darkness. (Proverbs 20:20)

15. Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old….Let your father and mother be glad; let her who bore you rejoice. (Proverbs 23:22, 25)

16. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart. (Luke 2:51)

17. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. (John 19:26-27)

18. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” (Ephesians 6:1-3)

Motherhood is a blessing from God.

19. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. (Proverbs 31:28)

20. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! (Luke 1:41-42)
